Albert Wilson’s Bio
Albert has been a key figure in the effort to reclaim and rebuild Mississippi communities, providing our youth with hope, security, and the ability to dream. He has given voice to the voiceless, help to the helpless, defense to the needy, and encouragement to the discouraged. Actively involved in Mississippi communities, Albert continuously gives back to our state. He also serves as a motivational speaker and mentor at churches and local schools, and is a positive role model for inner-city youth. Albert dedicates much of his time and expertise to assisting economically disadvantaged communities, families, senior citizens, veterans, and military family members.
Albert graduated from Jackson State University in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He has over 30 years of experience in business, technology, social service, and community development. Before becoming the full-time executive director of Genesis and Light Center, Albert worked in the corporate world as a computer professional for companies such as MCI WorldCom and Fermi Laboratories in Batavia, Illinois, and as a geometry teacher in the Jackson Public School District.
Albert chose to decline high-paying corporate jobs to return to Jackson, Mississippi, where he led a successful gasoline boycott known as “the Million Mississippian March.” He has also organized Crime Prevention rallies, Opioid Awareness Seminars, Campaigns Against Literacy, Healthy Snack Initiatives, Senior Citizen Socials, Water and Voter registration drives, and numerous other movements aimed at improving the lives, liberties, and living conditions of Mississippians.
Albert’s time in Illinois provided him with the experience necessary to pursue his passion for helping others, leading to the launch of his nonprofit organization, Genesis and Light Center. The organization continues to support economically disadvantaged families, senior citizens, and veterans with essential services and workforce skills. It also educates the community on relevant issues such as the opioid epidemic, crime prevention, healthy living, and career and economic development. Additionally, thousands of low-income children benefit from afterschool and summer programs that promote healthier living and provide much-needed structure.
Albert’s personal commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty, violence, and helplessness is evident in every aspect of his work. Through his nonprofit center, Albert has developed self-help programs designed to strengthen students, families, and the community on emotional, financial, physical, intellectual, and spiritual levels. His initiatives promote education, values, positive attitudes, and high self-esteem, encouraging participants to avoid alcohol, drugs, crime, and other at-risk behaviors. In addition to providing services that are often inaccessible, unaffordable, or nonexistent, Albert has dedicated countless hours to connecting individuals with the necessary agencies.
Today, Albert is happily married to Kim Wilson, and they have three children: Bryson, Victoria, and Brittney, as well as one grandchild, Kaia. Albert is a member of Greater Pearlie Grove MB Church in Jackson, where he serves in both the Christian education and audio-visual departments. He continues to lead Genesis and Light Center, managing ten full-time employees and coordinating numerous others. Albert has successfully managed fundraising events, written grant proposals, created budgets, and built partnerships, enabling his center to provide positive influences in the community.
As a candidate for mayor, Albert plans to leverage his experience in business, technology, and leadership to connect with Jacksonians of all ages and backgrounds. Having faced challenges in his own youth, Albert understands the difficulties many Jacksonians encounter and is committed to improving access to opportunities, strengthening the city’s economy, and rebuilding Jackson’s infrastructure.
